Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has termed the Great Nicobar Island development project as one of the biggest scams against the natural and tribal heritage of the country. Speaking at a press conference, Gandhi accused the central government of prioritizing commercial interests over the rights and well-being of indigenous tribal communities.
Allegations of Neglect
Gandhi claimed that the project, which involves the construction of a transshipment port, an international airport, and a power plant, would irreversibly damage the fragile ecosystem of the island and displace the native Shompen and Nicobarese tribes. He alleged that the government had not conducted adequate consultations with the tribal communities and had bypassed environmental clearance norms.
Government's Defense
The government, however, has defended the project, stating that it is crucial for India's strategic interests in the Indian Ocean region and will boost economic development. Officials have emphasized that the project includes measures for environmental protection and tribal welfare, including resettlement packages and livelihood opportunities.
Environmental activists and human rights groups have also raised concerns, pointing to the potential loss of biodiversity and cultural heritage. The project has been under scrutiny by the National Green Tribunal and various international organizations.
Gandhi's remarks come amid a broader political debate over development versus conservation, with opposition parties using the issue to criticize the government's track record on indigenous rights. The Congress leader called for a complete review of the project and greater transparency in decision-making.
