Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Monday demanded the immediate sacking of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan over the alleged leak of the NEET 2026 question paper, accusing the government of cheating over 22 lakh medical aspirants.
Gandhi's Strong Reaction
Taking to social media platform X, Gandhi wrote, "The NEET paper leak is a grave betrayal of the dreams of 22 lakh students. The Education Minister cannot escape responsibility. He must be sacked immediately." He further alleged that the leak was not an isolated incident but a symptom of systemic failure under the current government.
Opposition's Demand for JPC Probe
The Congress leader also reiterated the demand for a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) investigation into the matter. "A JPC is the only way to ensure a thorough and impartial probe. The government must not shield those responsible," he added. Several opposition parties have backed the demand, calling for a detailed inquiry into the leak and its impact on students.
Government's Response
In response, Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan refuted the allegations, stating that the leak was being investigated and strict action would be taken against the culprits. "The government is committed to protecting the interests of students. A high-level committee is probing the matter, and those found guilty will face the full force of the law," Pradhan said in a statement. He also accused the opposition of politicizing the issue.
Background of the Leak
The NEET 2026 exam, conducted on May 5, witnessed widespread protests after reports emerged that the question paper had been leaked in several states, including Bihar and Gujarat. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has registered a case and arrested multiple individuals in connection with the leak. The National Testing Agency (NTA) has announced a re-exam for affected candidates, but students and parents continue to demand accountability.
Impact on Aspirants
Over 22 lakh students appeared for the NEET UG 2026 exam, which is the gateway for admissions to medical and dental colleges across India. The leak has caused immense distress among aspirants, many of whom had prepared for months. "We feel cheated. Our hard work has been undermined by a few corrupt individuals," said a student from Delhi who wished to remain anonymous. Parents have also expressed anger, calling for a transparent system to prevent such incidents in the future.
Political Fallout
The NEET paper leak has become a major political issue, with the opposition targeting the Modi government over its handling of the education sector. Rahul Gandhi's demand for Pradhan's sacking is likely to intensify the debate in Parliament, where the opposition is expected to raise the matter during the ongoing session. The government, on its part, has maintained that it is taking all necessary steps to ensure justice for students.
