Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Monday launched a scathing attack on the central government over the alleged leak of the NEET-UG question paper, stating that the hard work and sacrifices of students have been crushed by the corrupt BJP regime.
Rahul Gandhi's Statement
In a post on social media platform X, Gandhi said, "The hard work and sacrifices of students have been crushed by the corrupt BJP regime. The NEET-UG paper leak is a testament to the failure of the government to ensure a fair and transparent examination system." He further alleged that the incident reflects the "systemic corruption" prevalent in the current administration.
Background of the Incident
The NEET-UG exam, conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA) on May 5, 2024, saw over 24 lakh candidates appearing for approximately 1.08 lakh MBBS and BDS seats across the country. Reports of a paper leak emerged soon after the exam, with students and opposition parties demanding a thorough investigation.
The controversy deepened when the NTA announced the results on June 4, with a record number of 67 candidates scoring a perfect 720/720, raising suspicions of irregularities. Several states, including Bihar, Gujarat, and Rajasthan, have reported cases of alleged malpractice.
Opposition's Demand for Probe
Opposition parties, including the Congress, have been demanding a Supreme Court-monitored investigation into the matter. They have also called for the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, holding him accountable for the lapse.
Rahul Gandhi's comments come a day after the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) took over the probe into the alleged leak. The CBI has registered a case and is examining the role of officials and intermediaries involved.
Government's Response
The central government has denied any large-scale leak, asserting that only isolated incidents of malpractice occurred. Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan stated that the NTA has taken strict action, including lodging FIRs and canceling the results of candidates found guilty of unfair means.
However, the opposition remains unconvinced, with Gandhi stating that the "BJP regime has betrayed the dreams of millions of students." He urged the government to take immediate steps to restore the credibility of the examination system.
Impact on Students
The paper leak has caused immense distress among students, many of whom had prepared for years for the exam. Several protests have been held across the country, with students demanding a re-examination and a fair process.
In his statement, Rahul Gandhi expressed solidarity with the affected students, saying, "The future of our youth cannot be left to the whims of a corrupt system. We stand with the students and will fight for their rights."
The issue is likely to be raised in the upcoming Parliament session, with the Congress planning to corner the government over its handling of the matter.
