Warship Commissioned with Over 75% Indigenous Content
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh commissioned INS Mahendragiri in Visakhapatnam (Vizag) on 11 July 2026, underscoring the warship's more than 75 per cent indigenous content. The Union Minister noted that this reflects India's design capability, manufacturing excellence, and the growing strength of its defence ecosystem.
Boost for Self-Reliance in Defence
INS Mahendragiri is a significant milestone in India's push for self-reliance under the 'Make in India' initiative. The vessel is built by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL) and incorporates advanced systems developed by Indian industries. According to the Ministry of Defence, the ship is equipped with state-of-the-art sensors and weapons, enhancing the Navy's operational reach.
Strategic Importance of Vizag Ceremony
The commissioning ceremony took place at the Eastern Naval Command headquarters in Vizag. Rajnath Singh praised the ship's crew and engineers, stating that INS Mahendragiri will strengthen maritime security in the Indian Ocean region. The event was attended by senior naval officers and defence officials.
