Authorities have seized cash, liquor, freebies, and other items worth a total of Rs 1,444 crore across five states holding elections, with Tamil Nadu topping the list, according to data released by the Election Commission.
Breakdown of Seizures
The seizures include 69.88 lakh litres of liquor valued at Rs 183.33 crore. Drugs worth Rs 337.88 crore were also confiscated, along with precious metals valued at Rs 250.14 crore. Freebies accounted for the largest share at Rs 518.73 crore.
Tamil Nadu Leads
Tamil Nadu recorded the highest value of seizures among the five states, contributing significantly to the total. The Election Commission has been closely monitoring the distribution of inducements to voters.
The crackdown aims to ensure free and fair elections by preventing the use of money power. Enforcement agencies have intensified checks at checkpoints and surveillance of suspicious activities.
Other states in the election cycle also saw substantial seizures, but Tamil Nadu's figures stood out due to large recoveries of cash and freebies. The Election Commission continues to urge citizens to report any instances of bribery or illegal inducements.
