Air Marshal Ashutosh Dixit has revealed that defence projects valued at more than Rs 5 lakh crore have received approval, with a strong emphasis on indigenisation. The announcement was made during a high-level day-long conclave titled ‘Atmanirbharta in Defence – Opportunities for MSMEs’, organised by the Bramha Research Foundation (BRF) in collaboration with the Indian Navy. The event took place at Taj Lands End in Mumbai.
Focus on Self-Reliance
The Air Marshal underscored the government's commitment to achieving self-reliance in the defence sector. He highlighted that the approved projects are designed to reduce dependency on foreign imports and bolster domestic manufacturing capabilities. This initiative aligns with the broader ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ (Self-Reliant India) campaign, which aims to promote local production and innovation.
Opportunities for MSMEs
A significant portion of the conclave was dedicated to discussing the role of Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in the defence ecosystem. Air Marshal Dixit noted that MSMEs are crucial for driving indigenisation, as they bring agility, innovation, and cost-effectiveness to defence manufacturing. He encouraged MSMEs to actively participate in the defence sector, citing the government's supportive policies and simplified procedures.
- The approved projects cover a wide range of defence equipment, including aircraft, naval vessels, and advanced weaponry systems.
- Indigenisation efforts are expected to create numerous job opportunities and boost the overall economy.
- Special emphasis has been placed on technology transfer and collaboration between public sector units and private enterprises.
Navy’s Role and Support
The Indian Navy played a key role in the conclave, showcasing its commitment to fostering indigenous capabilities. Navy officials presented case studies of successful indigenisation projects and outlined future requirements. The collaboration between the Navy and BRF aims to bridge the gap between defence needs and industrial capabilities, particularly for MSMEs.
Air Marshal Dixit concluded by reiterating that the defence ministry is fully dedicated to the ‘Make in India’ initiative, with a clear roadmap for reducing import dependence. He urged all stakeholders to leverage the opportunities presented by the approved projects and contribute to a self-reliant India.
