Security has been significantly tightened at a popular jhalmuri stall in Kolkata after its owner received death threats, following a visit by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The stall, located in the heart of the city, had gained attention after the Prime Minister stopped by during his recent visit to West Bengal.
Owner Receives Threatening Calls
According to the complaint filed by the stall owner, unidentified callers threatened to kill him and blow up his stall with bombs unless he shut down the business. The threats came shortly after the Prime Minister's visit, which had drawn large crowds and media coverage.
Police Response
Local police have increased patrols and deployed additional personnel around the stall. A senior police officer stated that an investigation is underway and that the authorities are taking the threats seriously. “We have registered a case and are tracking the callers,” the officer said.
The stall owner expressed fear but also determination to continue his business. “I am scared for my family, but I have done nothing wrong. I will not give in to threats,” he told reporters.
The incident has sparked political reactions, with opposition parties criticizing the law-and-order situation in the state. The ruling party in West Bengal has condemned the threats and assured full protection to the vendor.
