Ladakh Climate Activist Sonam Wangchuk Released After Six Months in Jail

Prominent Ladakh climate activist and innovator Sonam Wangchuk has returned to public attention following his release from the Jodhpur Central Jail after a detention period of six months. Wangchuk was held under the stringent National Security Act (NSA) amid widespread protests in Ladakh that demanded stronger constitutional safeguards for the region.

Background of the Detention and Protests

Wangchuk led climate-focused demonstrations that drew significant political scrutiny from authorities. The Union Home Ministry accused him of inciting a mob through his speeches, alleging that these actions led to violent clashes in Leh on September 24, 2025, which resulted in casualties. His detention under the NSA sparked debates about civil liberties and environmental activism in India.

Emotional Reunion with Wife Gitanjali J Angmo

Released on a Saturday after months of confinement, Wangchuk was reunited with his partner, Gitanjali J Angmo. This marked their first proper catch-up since his arrest, as previous meetings in jail were limited and monitored. Gitanjali had visited him earlier in Jodhpur Central Jail with advocate Ritam Khare on October 7, 2025, showing unwavering support throughout his ordeal.

Who is Gitanjali J Angmo?

Gitanjali J Angmo is the wife of Sonam Wangchuk, known as a dedicated social activist and educator. She stood firmly by his side during his six-month detention, reflecting their deep bond rooted in shared values and a commitment to social causes.

Early Life and Education: Born in Balasore, Odisha, to a Punjabi-Jain family, Gitanjali developed a keen interest in social development from an early age. She earned a Physics degree from Fakir Mohan University and later pursued an MBA in Marketing and Finance from the Xavier Institute of Management in Bhubaneswar.

Career and Shared Mission: As a social entrepreneur and educator, her career aligns closely with Wangchuk's mission-driven life. Both are passionate about causes larger than themselves, particularly in education and environmental sustainability.

Post-Release Updates and Health Concerns

Following Wangchuk's release, Gitanjali took to social media to share heartfelt updates. She posted, “After a long time had a free flowing chat with @Wangchuk66 without glancing at the scary clock every now and then to make the most of the fleeting 60 minutes as in jail!” She added, “Taking him for a health checkup as per the strong recommendations of our family doctor. He will be under medical observation for 36 hours in a good hospital! #SatyamevaJayate”

How the Couple Met

The duo first met at an education conference, where they experienced an instant connection. In an interview with Brut, Gitanjali shared, “We met at a conference, an education conference. It was so interesting to see that we were finishing each other's sentences. There was so much similarity in the way we wanted to work in the field of education and life in general.” She noted that Sonam saw her as akin to his mother, the only woman he had deeply loved before her.

This reunion highlights not only Wangchuk's resilience but also the supportive role of his wife, Gitanjali, in navigating the challenges of his activism and detention.
