Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Unveils Major Development Initiatives in Southern Districts
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin inaugurated a series of significant infrastructure and information technology projects with a combined value exceeding ₹1,500 crore during his official visit to Madurai on Saturday. The development initiatives span across Madurai, Dindigul, and Sivaganga districts, focusing on water supply, employment generation, and educational enhancement.
Comprehensive Drinking Water Scheme Launched
The cornerstone project inaugurated by the Chief Minister was the Combined Drinking Water Scheme, designed to address the critical water needs of 867 rural habitations across seven unions in Madurai district. Additionally, the scheme will supply two million liters per day (MLD) of water to the Sipcot industrial complex in Dindigul district.
Originally sanctioned in 2022 with a budget allocation of ₹1,536.31 crore under the central government's Jal Jeevan Mission, the project commenced construction work in 2023. Water for this comprehensive scheme is sourced from an intake well located on the Vaigai river near Andipatti, then pumped to a dedicated water treatment plant (WTP) for purification and distribution.
This ambitious water supply initiative is projected to benefit approximately 10 lakh residents across multiple regions including Alanganallur, Chellampatti, Kallikudi, Thirumangalam, Thiruparankundram, Usilampatti, and Vadipatti, significantly improving their access to clean drinking water.
Major IT Expansion and Employment Generation
In a significant boost to the technology sector, Chief Minister Stalin inaugurated the expanded engineering development centre of Pinnacle Infotech at the Madurai ELCOT IT Park. This expansion, constructed at a cost of ₹150 crore, has created an additional 2,000 direct employment opportunities according to official announcements.
Simultaneously, global technology firm HCL signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for another expansion project at the same IT park, involving a fresh investment of ₹150 crore. This initiative is expected to generate 1,000 new job opportunities, specifically aimed at creating high-quality technology employment for youth from southern districts of Tamil Nadu.
During the inauguration ceremony, the Chief Minister also laid the foundation stone for the Pinnacle employee housing project, which will be developed on 14.3 acres of land. This residential facility is designed to provide accommodation for approximately 1,200 employees working within the IT Park complex.
Educational and Scientific Infrastructure Development
The development agenda extended to educational infrastructure with the inauguration of the Ankuran Science Center, a modern science facility jointly established by Pinnacle company and the Madurai Municipal Corporation. Established with the primary objective of encouraging scientific interest among students and fostering innovative thinking, this center aims to bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical applications.
Spread across 12,000 square feet, the science center features advanced laboratories dedicated to physics, chemistry, biology, mathematics, robotics, and programming, providing students with hands-on learning experiences.
At the Meenakshi Government Women's Arts College in Madurai, the HP Computer Skill Development Center was established with an investment of ₹50 lakh. This facility is specifically designed to enhance digital literacy and employability skills among students, effectively bridging the gap between educational curriculum and industry requirements.
Additional Infrastructure Projects
The Chief Minister also inaugurated a newly constructed administrative building for the Vadipatti town panchayat, developed at a cost of ₹1.67 crore, improving local governance infrastructure.
In Sivaganga district, a statue honoring the Maruthu brothers, prominent figures in Tamil history, was inaugurated by Chief Minister Stalin. This memorial installation was completed at a cost of ₹1.07 crore, serving as a tribute to their historical significance and contribution to the region.
These comprehensive development initiatives represent a significant investment in the southern districts of Tamil Nadu, addressing critical infrastructure needs while simultaneously creating employment opportunities and enhancing educational facilities across multiple sectors.
