A 45-year-old man lost his life in a wild elephant attack at the Akamalavaram Unnathi tribal settlement near Malampuzha in Palakkad district early on Thursday. The incident occurred around 3 am, highlighting the risks faced by communities living close to forest areas.
Victim identified
The deceased has been identified as Chandran, a resident of the settlement. According to officials, the attack took place while Chandran and two others were sleeping under a tree outside their house. The warm climate had prompted them to sleep outdoors, a common practice in the region.
Details of the attack
As per local residents, a wild elephant emerged from the nearby forest and charged at the group. While the other two individuals managed to escape, Chandran was trampled to death by the animal. The incident has sent shockwaves through the small tribal community.
Rare occurrence
Residents noted that while the settlement is located in close proximity to the forest, elephant attacks are uncommon in the locality. Due to the rarity of such incidents, people in the colony typically did not take precautionary measures. The lack of preventive steps has now become a matter of concern for the community.
Authorities have been alerted and are expected to take necessary actions to prevent future incidents. The forest department may also conduct awareness programs to educate residents on safety protocols in elephant-prone areas.
