Opposition leader Suvendu Adhikari on Friday launched a sharp attack on West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, calling her a 'weak and coward' leader, while issuing a direct warning to Aam Janata Unnayan Party (AJUP) chief Humayun Kabir over his recent inflammatory remarks.
Adhikari's criticism of Mamata Banerjee
Speaking to reporters in Kolkata, Adhikari said, 'I am not a 'weak, coward' CM like Mamata Banerjee. She has failed to control hate speech and communal tensions in the state.' He accused the chief minister of being soft on elements that spread divisive rhetoric, particularly targeting Kabir's recent statements.
Warning to Humayun Kabir
Adhikari specifically warned Humayun Kabir, an MLA from the AJUP, to refrain from hate speech. 'If he crosses the line again, there will be consequences. The law must take its course,' Adhikari said, without elaborating on potential actions. Kabir had recently made remarks that were widely condemned as inflammatory by various political groups.
According to sources, Kabir's comments during a public meeting last week sparked protests, with several parties demanding his arrest. The West Bengal government has not yet taken any formal action against Kabir.
Political context and reactions
The exchange highlights the ongoing political friction in West Bengal, where the BJP-led opposition has repeatedly criticized the Trinamool Congress government over law and order. Adhikari, a former TMC leader who switched to the BJP, has been vocal against Banerjee's administration.
In response, TMC spokesperson Kunal Ghosh dismissed Adhikari's remarks, saying, 'Suvendu Adhikari is desperate for attention. Mamata Banerjee has always taken strong action against hate speech.' The AJUP chief has not yet commented on Adhikari's warning.
Impact on state politics
Political analysts suggest that this incident could escalate tensions ahead of the upcoming local body elections. The state has witnessed several communal flare-ups in recent months, with opposition parties accusing the government of inaction.
As of now, no formal complaint has been filed against Humayun Kabir, but Adhikari's warning signals a tougher stance from the opposition. The development is likely to dominate the state's political discourse in the coming days.
