Kolkata witnessed a political confrontation on Thursday when Trinamool Congress MP Sougata Roy faced a protest outside a police station in West Bengal's North 24 Parganas district. The 78-year-old parliamentarian, who represents the Dum Dum constituency, was at the Nimta police station to submit a deputation regarding alleged attacks on TMC councillors in the Nimta and North Dum Dum areas.
Protest Turns Hostile
As Roy was leaving the police station, a group of individuals surrounded his vehicle, shouting slogans and accusing him of theft. The situation escalated when eggs were allegedly hurled at his car. Police personnel stationed at the scene intervened to prevent further escalation and ensured the MP's safe departure.
Roy's Allegations
Speaking to the press, Roy claimed that the protest was politically motivated and orchestrated by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). He stated, "BJP supporters gathered there and created a disturbance when I was coming out of the police station. They shouted slogans and hurled eggs at my car. This kind of politics is unfortunate." Roy expressed disappointment over what he described as a decline in political decorum.
BJP's Denial
The BJP, however, denied any involvement in the incident. A local BJP leader explained, "People are frustrated over corruption and have spontaneously protested. It has nothing to do with the BJP as a political party." The leader suggested that the demonstration was a reflection of public anger against alleged irregularities under the TMC regime.
Background of the Incident
The protest occurred after Roy visited the Nimta police station to file a complaint about attacks on TMC councillors. According to party sources, there have been multiple incidents of vandalism and intimidation against TMC representatives in the region. The MP was seeking police action against the alleged perpetrators. However, his visit took an unexpected turn when demonstrators gathered outside the station.
Security Measures
Police have since increased security in the area and are reviewing CCTV footage to identify the individuals involved in the protest. No arrests have been reported yet, but authorities have assured a thorough investigation. The incident has raised tensions between the ruling TMC and the opposition BJP in West Bengal, with both parties trading accusations.
Political Reactions
Political leaders from both sides have responded to the incident. TMC spokespersons condemned the attack on their MP, calling it a sign of growing political intolerance. Meanwhile, BJP leaders reiterated that the protest was a spontaneous outburst by citizens and not a party-sponsored event. The state government has urged calm and promised to maintain law and order.
This incident adds to the ongoing political friction in West Bengal, where the TMC and BJP have been engaged in a bitter rivalry. The upcoming local body elections are expected to further intensify the political climate.
