NEW DELHI: In the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections, Trinamool Congress (TMC) candidate Babar Ali emerged victorious from the Jalangi constituency in Murshidabad district, securing a decisive win by a margin of 21,516 votes. He defeated his nearest rivals, Communist Party of India (Marxist) candidates Ianus Ali Sarkar and Naba Kumar Sarkar.
Voter Demographics and Turnout
The Jalangi Assembly constituency had a total of 2,62,787 registered voters on the electoral rolls for the 2026 election. Among them, 1,36,138 were male, 1,26,647 were female, and two voters belonged to the third gender. The constituency is entirely rural, with no urban voters on its rolls.
West Bengal voted across 294 seats in two phases on April 23 and April 29, recording a combined turnout of nearly 93 per cent. This was the highest voter turnout since Independence and one of the largest in Indian electoral history. The surge was not limited to rural strongholds but also saw a dramatic rise in urban centres, with women voters outpacing men to drive record participation.
Historical Context
Jalangi is a key legislative assembly constituency in West Bengal's Murshidabad district. In the 2021 Assembly elections, the seat was won by the All India Trinamool Congress, with candidate Abdur Razzak defeating CPM's Saiful Islam Molla by a margin of 79,276 votes. The Jalangi Assembly constituency is part of the Murshidabad Lok Sabha constituency.
In the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, Trinamool Congress candidate Abu Taher Khan won the Murshidabad parliamentary seat, defeating CPI(M) leader Md. Salim by a margin of 164,215 votes. Voter turnout in Jalangi has remained high over the years, though it has gradually declined. The turnout percentages were 89.23 per cent in 2011, 83.92 per cent in 2016, 83.28 per cent in 2019, 85.12 per cent in 2021, and 80.65 per cent in 2024.
