TVK claims DMK-AIADMK pact; DMK denies alliance

In a fresh political controversy in Tamil Nadu, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) leader Aadhav Arjuna on Thursday claimed that the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and the main opposition All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) have reached an electoral understanding to share power in the state. The allegation was immediately rejected by the DMK, which termed it baseless.

TVK's Allegation

Aadhav Arjuna, a prominent TVK functionary, stated at a press conference in Chennai that the two major Dravidian parties had secretly negotiated a pact to ensure mutual electoral gains in upcoming local body elections. “There is a clear understanding between DMK and AIADMK to divide seats and avoid contesting against each other in key constituencies. This is a betrayal of the people’s mandate,” he said.

DMK's Denial

Senior DMK leader and former minister S Reghupathy dismissed the charge. “Our party has no intention of forging any alliance with the AIADMK to capture power. Such claims are completely false and are being made to divert attention from the opposition’s internal problems,” he told reporters. Reghupathy added that the DMK is committed to contesting all elections independently and on its own strength.

According to political analysts, the allegation comes amid heightened speculation about possible realignments in Tamil Nadu politics ahead of the 2026 assembly elections. The TVK, led by actor-turned-politician Vijay, has been positioning itself as a third front, seeking to break the bipolar dominance of DMK and AIADMK.

Reactions from AIADMK

The AIADMK also refuted the claim. Party spokesperson D Jayakumar said, “We have no electoral understanding with the DMK. This is a baseless rumor spread by those who fear a strong opposition.” He urged the public not to believe such “divisive propaganda.”

Political observers note that while DMK and AIADMK have been bitter rivals for decades, there have been instances of informal cooperation on specific issues. However, a formal electoral pact remains unlikely given the intense competition between the two parties.

Impact on Tamil Nadu Politics

The TVK’s allegations have stirred debate on social media, with many questioning the credibility of the claim. Some analysts suggest that the TVK is attempting to create a narrative of a “grand alliance” between the two major parties to consolidate anti-incumbency votes. “By alleging a DMK-AIADMK pact, TVK hopes to position itself as the only genuine alternative,” said political commentator R Suresh.

As of now, no concrete evidence has been presented to support the claim, and both DMK and AIADMK continue to deny any secret understanding.
