Motorcycle-Truck Collision Claims One Life

A 25-year-old motorcyclist died and a woman riding pillion was seriously injured early Wednesday morning on the Chandigarh-Ambala national highway. The deceased was identified as Preet Singh, a resident of village Dappar in Lalru. The injured woman, Sandeep Kaur (31), wife of Himmat Singh and also from Dappar, is in critical condition and undergoing treatment at a Chandigarh hospital.

According to police reports, Preet Singh was heading to Zirakpur on his motorcycle, where he worked at a private company. Sandeep Kaur, who works at a private school in Zirakpur, was riding pillion. At around 7 am, near Indus Hospital, their motorcycle collided with a truck parked on the road. The impact was so severe that the motorcycle became lodged in the back of the truck. Both were seriously injured and rushed to a hospital. Doctors declared Preet Singh dead on arrival, while Sandeep Kaur was referred to GMCH-32 due to the severity of her injuries. Police have seized the body and the truck and launched an investigation.

In a separate incident on the same highway, a 21-year-old woman died and five members of a family along with a rickshaw driver were injured when a speeding SUV hit an e-rickshaw in Janetpur, Dera Bassi. The family was returning from a fair in Dera Bassi to the Lalru area.

The deceased was identified as Chanchal Gupta, daughter of Avinash Raj Gupta. She died on the spot. Six others were seriously injured, including her mother Kavita, her 18-year-old sister Renu, and her two younger brothers Shivam and Yuvi. Avinash Kumar Gupta, a resident of Lalru Mandi, had taken his family to a fair in Dera Bassi. Late Tuesday evening, as they were returning home in an e-rickshaw, a speeding Innova hit them from behind near Janetpur village on the Chandigarh-Ambala highway. The collision was so forceful that the e-rickshaw crashed into an electric pole on the roadside.

Police Investigation Underway

Dera Bassi SHO Sumit Mor confirmed that the driver of the SUV fled the scene after the accident. Police have taken both vehicles into custody and are investigating the matter. No arrests have been reported yet.

These back-to-back accidents highlight the dangers on the Chandigarh-Ambala highway, a busy route that has seen multiple fatalities in recent months. Authorities are urged to enhance traffic safety measures, including better lighting, signage, and enforcement of parking regulations.
