Unregistered Pilgrims Strain Amarnath Yatra Infrastructure
A significant number of unregistered pilgrims have arrived for the annual Amarnath Yatra, creating a management challenge for authorities in Jammu and Kashmir. Many of these pilgrims are staying in budget hotels, dharamshalas, and private accommodations while awaiting official registration, according to officials familiar with the situation.
Accommodation and Registration Challenges
The influx of unregistered devotees has put pressure on lodging facilities in base camps and transit points. Authorities estimate that thousands of pilgrims have bypassed the mandatory registration process, which is designed to ensure safety and manage crowd flow along the perilous mountain route to the 3,880-meter-high cave shrine. The unregistered pilgrims are reportedly seeking last-minute registration slots, causing bottlenecks at registration counters.
Official Response and Security Concerns
Officials have expressed concern over the unregulated movement of pilgrims, which could compromise security arrangements and emergency response capabilities. The yatra, which runs for about two months, typically sees over 3 lakh registered pilgrims. This year, the surge in unregistered pilgrims is being viewed as the first major test for the administration, which has implemented new crowd management measures. According to a senior official, “We are monitoring the situation closely and have deployed additional teams to facilitate registration and ensure compliance.”
Impact on Local Economy and Safety
The presence of unregistered pilgrims has also impacted local businesses, with hoteliers and dharamshala owners reporting high occupancy. However, safety remains a primary concern, as unregistered pilgrims may not have undergone mandatory health screenings or received necessary safety briefings. The Shri Amarnath Shrine Board has urged all pilgrims to register through official channels to avail of insurance and medical facilities. The yatra is scheduled to conclude in August, and authorities are working to streamline the registration process to accommodate the unexpected numbers.
