The Uttar Pradesh government has extended the tenure of the Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing the alleged theft of funds from the Ayodhya Ram temple construction by 15 days, officials confirmed on Tuesday. The extension aims to allow the SIT to investigate the matter thoroughly and broaden the scope of the probe.
Extension Granted for Deeper Investigation
According to a government spokesperson, the decision was taken to ensure that all aspects of the case are examined comprehensively. The SIT, originally constituted to look into the misappropriation of funds meant for the Ram temple, had requested additional time to complete its inquiry and gather more evidence.
The extension comes amid reports of irregularities in the collection and utilization of donations for the temple project. The SIT has been tasked with tracing the flow of funds and identifying those responsible for any financial mismanagement.
Background of the Case
The alleged fund theft came to light earlier this year when discrepancies were noticed in the accounts of the temple trust. The state government promptly formed the SIT to investigate the matter. The team has been examining documents, summoning witnesses, and reviewing financial transactions related to the temple construction.
Officials said the SIT has made significant progress but needs more time to conclude the investigation. The extension will allow them to examine additional records and question more individuals involved in the fundraising and construction activities.
Government's Commitment to Transparency
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has reiterated the government's commitment to transparency in the temple project. "The state government is determined to ensure that every rupee donated for the Ram temple is used properly. Any wrongdoing will be dealt with strictly," a senior official quoted the CM as saying.
The extension has been welcomed by various stakeholders, including religious leaders and donors, who have been demanding a thorough probe into the alleged financial irregularities. The SIT is expected to submit its final report within the extended period.
Impact on Temple Construction
The ongoing investigation has not affected the construction work at the temple site, which continues as per schedule. The temple trust has assured that the project remains on track, with completion expected by the end of next year. However, the controversy has raised questions about the management of funds and oversight mechanisms.
As the SIT continues its work, the state government has also announced plans to strengthen the financial monitoring of the temple project to prevent any future irregularities. The extended probe is seen as a step toward restoring public confidence in the temple's construction process.
