In a significant political development, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) leader Vijay met the Governor of Tamil Nadu on Friday, paving the way for his swearing-in as the state's Chief Minister. The ceremony is scheduled for Sunday, according to party sources.
Formal Meeting at Raj Bhavan
Vijay, accompanied by senior party leaders, arrived at Raj Bhavan in Chennai for a courtesy call with Governor R.N. Ravi. The meeting lasted approximately 30 minutes, during which Vijay formally staked his claim to form the government. The Governor accepted the claim and invited him to take the oath of office on Sunday morning.
Support from Allies
The TVK leader has secured the backing of several regional parties and independent legislators, ensuring a comfortable majority in the Assembly. Party insiders confirmed that all 124 MLAs from the alliance have pledged support, exceeding the required majority mark of 117.
Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Vijay expressed gratitude to the Governor and the people of Tamil Nadu. "This is a victory for the people's mandate. We will work tirelessly for the development of the state and uphold the principles of social justice," he said.
Preparations for the Swearing-In Ceremony
The oath-taking ceremony will be held at the Madras University Centenary Auditorium at 10:30 AM on Sunday. Security arrangements have been tightened, and over 2,000 police personnel will be deployed. Invitations have been sent to dignitaries, including former Chief Ministers, Union Ministers, and leaders of allied parties.
Party workers have begun preparations for a grand celebration, with decorations and public gatherings planned across major cities. The TVK has also announced a public rally after the ceremony to thank supporters.
Political Implications
Vijay's ascension marks a new era in Tamil Nadu politics, ending the decades-long dominance of the DMK and AIADMK. Analysts believe his focus on anti-corruption and welfare schemes resonated with voters, especially the youth. The new government is expected to announce a revised budget and key policy changes within the first 100 days.
As the state gears up for the transition, all eyes are on the new Chief Minister's first cabinet meeting, likely to be held on Monday. The portfolio distribution among allies is expected to be finalized in the coming days.
