Election Commission Announces Two-Phase Polling for West Bengal Assembly Elections

The Election Commission of India made a significant announcement on Sunday, declaring that the upcoming assembly elections in West Bengal will be conducted in just two phases. This marks a dramatic reduction from the extensive eight-phase polling that characterized the 2021 elections in the state.

Revised Poll Schedule and Rationale

Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, while unveiling the election schedule for four states and one Union territory, confirmed that voting in West Bengal will take place on April 23 and April 29. Kumar elaborated that this decision followed thorough deliberations within the Commission.

"With regards to the West Bengal elections to be held in two phases instead of eight phases earlier, the Commission has held detailed deliberations and in its considered opinion, it was found necessary to reduce the number of phases and bring it down to an extent where it is convenient for everybody," stated Kumar during the press conference.

Addressing Electoral Violence Concerns

The Chief Election Commissioner also directly confronted the issue of poll violence, which has been a persistent concern in West Bengal. He assured that stringent legal action would be taken against police officers implicated in violence during previous elections.

"With regards to the police officers who were involved in the violence in earlier elections, the list has been sought, as is known to the media during our visit to West Bengal, and necessary action as per law shall be taken," Kumar emphasized.

He further clarified that a supplementary list of names, as mandated by the Supreme Court and overseen by judges under the Calcutta High Court's direction, would be integrated with the existing electoral rolls as it becomes available.

Comprehensive Election Calendar

The Election Commission's announcement encompassed poll dates for:

  • Assam
  • Kerala
  • Tamil Nadu
  • West Bengal
  • Puducherry (Union Territory)

The counting of votes for all these regions, including the West Bengal assembly elections, is uniformly scheduled for May 4, 2026.

Political Reactions to the Poll Announcement

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) both responded positively to the Election Commission's decision to implement a two-phase polling system in West Bengal.

The BJP's West Bengal unit took to social media platform X to declare, "This is not merely an election, it is a civilisational battle. The countdown to the end of Maha Jungle Raj has begun." The party highlighted the voting dates and expressed optimism about the May 4 counting day, stating it would herald a new dawn for Bengal.

In response, TMC state general secretary Kunal Ghosh asserted the people's unwavering support for the ruling party. "People of Bengal are with TMC. This was again shown in the massive turnout of youth in Yuva Sathi camps held by the Mamata Banerjee government," Ghosh remarked.

Historical Context and Electoral Landscape

In the 2021 West Bengal assembly elections, the Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress secured a decisive victory, winning 215 seats. The Bharatiya Janata Party emerged as the principal opposition party, capturing 77 constituencies. The upcoming elections are poised to be a critical contest, with the reduced polling phases aimed at enhancing convenience and security for voters across the state.
