Bengaluru: A traffic constable attached to the Byatarayanapura traffic police station has won widespread appreciation from netizens after a video of him performing a 'buddy carry' to help a person with disability (PwD) cross a waterlogged road went viral.
Incident Details
The incident took place around 7:30 pm on Friday when water began overflowing onto Mysuru Road. Constable HM Anil was managing traffic opposite the KSRTC bus terminal on Mysuru Road and also assisting pedestrians in crossing the busy road, as many vehicles failed to stop even when the traffic signal turned red.
Constable Anil recounted, "I saw a man waiting to cross the road from the bus terminal. I called out to him, saying 'Sir banni' (come here). He signaled for me to come towards him. When I approached him, I realized he was specially challenged. He told me it was difficult for him to cross the road as the water flow was increasing."
Holding the man's hand, the constable began helping him cross the road. However, when they reached the middle, the man started losing his balance and found it difficult to proceed. "Realizing the risk and danger he was in, I lifted him onto my shoulder and carried him across the road. I also asked him to wait until the rain stopped. He thanked me and walked away," Anil told TOI.
Meanwhile, some of Anil's friends, who were standing on the opposite pavement, recorded his act on their mobile phones and shared it on social media. By Saturday, the video had gone viral, with netizens praising the constable's selfless act.
Flight Disruptions at KIA
In a separate development, heavy rain accompanied by strong winds disrupted flight operations at Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) on Saturday evening. This forced the diversion of 15 incoming flights and caused delays to several departures.
Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL) sources said that adverse weather conditions over the city affected air traffic movements during the evening peak hours. As many as 36 outbound flights were delayed until 9:30 pm.
