Lok Sabha Speaker Invites Expert Suggestions on Old Parliament Building's Future
Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla stated on Monday that the government has invited suggestions from experts concerning the future use of the Old Parliament Building, now known as Samvidhan Sadan. He confirmed that a final decision will emerge from the general body meeting of Lok Sabha, which he chairs.
Government's Commitment to Preservation
The government maintains a clear stance on preserving the building and ensuring its efficient utilization. Officials emphasize that the structure will be conserved as an archaeological asset and a symbol of India's democratic heritage.
In response to a query about the building's fate, Birla explained the process. "We have sought suggestions from different experts and we are also holding discussions with them," he said. "After getting all inputs, this will be discussed at the general body meeting of Lok Sabha under the Speaker's chairmanship, which is attended by all floor leaders."
Decision-Making Process and Historical Context
Birla highlighted that this approach mirrors past decisions. "We will finalise after deliberations. Even when the new Parliament Building was built, the final decision on the use of new building was taken by the same general body," he noted.
Plans for the Old Parliament Building include several key initiatives:
- Retrofitting the structure to enhance its functionality.
- Creating additional spaces for offices and parliamentary events.
- Converting a section into a 'Museum of Democracy'.
Prime Minister's Vision for Samvidhan Sadan
Prime Minister Narendra Modi previously addressed the building's significance. Speaking in the Central Hall on September 19, 2023, he bid farewell to the Old Parliament Building and proposed a new name.
"I request that in future, if both of you gentlemen agree, then it should be known as the 'Samvidhan Sadan'. This way, it will forever remain an inspiration in our lives," Modi said.
He elaborated on the importance of this change. "And, when we call it 'Samvidhan Sadan', then the memory of those great men, the distinguished great men, who once used to sit here in the Constituent Assembly, will also be associated with it. Therefore, we should not miss the opportunity to give this gift to future generations," he added.
The ongoing discussions aim to balance preservation with practical use, ensuring the building continues to inspire while serving functional purposes.
