GRP returns bag with Rs 11 lakh valuables to Mumbai commuter

Mumbai: A bag containing gold jewellery and a digital camera collectively valued at Rs 11 lakh, which was left behind in a local train by a commuter, was recently retrieved and returned to him by the Government Railway Police (GRP).

How the bag was found

Constable Kherade from the Andheri GRP chowky was on night duty when he received a call from the control room around 11:45 pm on May 24 about an abandoned bag spotted in a local train. The train was scheduled to arrive shortly at Andheri railway station. Kherade boarded the Churchgate-bound train and discovered a white leather bag in a first-class coach. He brought the bag to the Andheri GRP chowky and informed the control room about the retrieval.

Contents of the bag

Upon inspection, the bag was found to contain 7 tolas of gold jewellery worth approximately Rs 10.5 lakh and a digital camera valued at Rs 45,000. The total value of the items was around Rs 11 lakh.

Returning the valuables

The GRP traced the owner of the bag, a commuter named Karan Shah, and contacted him via phone. He was summoned to the Andheri GRP chowky, where his identity was verified to confirm he was the rightful owner. After due verification, the bag was returned to him with all valuables intact.

The prompt action by the GRP constable ensured that the commuter did not suffer a significant financial loss. The incident highlights the vigilance and efficiency of the railway police in safeguarding passengers' belongings.
