4-Year-Old Boy Dies After 21-Hour Borewell Rescue in Ambala

Four-year-old Nirvair Singh, who fell into a borewell in Ambala on Tuesday morning, was retrieved dead after a 21-hour rescue operation. The incident occurred in Dhanaura village, where the boy was playing in the fields.

Rescue Operation and Medical Examination

The rescue operation concluded at around 3:25 am on Wednesday. Nirvair was taken to the Civil Hospital in Ambala City, where doctors declared him brought dead. Medical Officer Dr Rishipal stated that the boy was examined immediately after being pulled out, and efforts were made to revive him, but he could not be saved.

Dr Sumit Kukreja, who conducted the post-mortem, reported injuries on the boy's head, chest, and knees. Traces of muddy water were found inside the body, indicating drowning. The cause of death was a combination of drowning and injuries. Dr Kukreja noted that the boy likely did not survive long after falling into the borewell.

Cremation and Grief

After the post-mortem, the body was handed over to the family for cremation. Amid rain, the cremation was performed in the village, with a large number of villagers and relatives bidding farewell.

Nirvair’s uncle, Harinder Singh, expressed grief, stating, “Today we are going back home empty-handed. He was brought out after 21 hours. The administration and the villagers helped us a lot but he couldn’t be saved. We have lost our child due to the negligence of some people. The police should take appropriate action against them. My elder brother and other family members are still in shock. We still can’t believe that Nirvair is no more. The government should ensure that no such incident occurs again.”

FIR Registered for Negligence

Ambala SP Ajit Singh Shekhawat confirmed that a case has been registered against the owner of the agricultural field and two other individuals who had taken the field on lease. The borewell had failed, and they had another borewell dug nearby, shifting the motor but failing to properly close the old borewell.

The FIR, under section 106 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, was registered against field owner Harnaik Singh, Dilpreet Singh, and Baljeet Singh, based on a complaint by Gurdeep Singh, a relative of Nirvair. The complaint stated that the accused were repeatedly asked to close the borewell but ignored the requests.

Details of the Incident

Nirvair, a resident of Dhanaura, had gone to the fields with his father, Manjeet Singh, a contractual employee in the power department, at around 6:30 am on Tuesday to give food to the boy’s grandfather. While playing, he accidentally fell into a borewell on a neighboring field. His father and grandfather raised the alarm upon hearing his screams. Local residents and an emergency response team rushed to the spot and launched rescue efforts, but could not pull him out.

A multi-agency rescue operation was launched, involving personnel from the police, National Disaster Response Force, State Disaster Response Force, and the Army, along with heavy machinery. Despite the efforts, the child could not be saved.
