Anganwadi workers in Amritsar staged a protest on Wednesday, demanding the fulfillment of pre-poll promises made by political parties. The workers, who are part of the Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS) scheme, gathered at the local district administration office, raising slogans and holding placards.
Key Demands
The protestors listed several demands, including better wages, job security, and regularization of their services. They also sought the implementation of the National Minimum Wage Act, which would ensure a minimum monthly salary of INR 18,000. Currently, Anganwadi workers receive a meager honorarium of INR 4,500 to INR 5,000 per month.
Pre-Poll Promises
Political parties had promised to improve the working conditions of Anganwadi workers during the election campaign. However, the workers claim that no concrete steps have been taken since the formation of the new government. The protestors emphasized that they would continue their agitation until their demands are met.
Support from Unions
The protest was supported by various trade unions and women's organizations. They extended solidarity to the Anganwadi workers and called for immediate action from the state government. The unions also demanded that the government allocate adequate funds for the welfare of these workers.
Government Response
District officials assured the protestors that their demands would be forwarded to the higher authorities. However, no immediate solution was provided. The workers have threatened to intensify their protest if their demands are not addressed within a week.
Anganwadi workers play a crucial role in providing nutrition and early childhood education to children in rural areas. Their low wages and lack of job security have been a long-standing issue, with several protests organized across the state in the past.
