Patna: Bihar's health minister, Nishant Kumar, stated on Thursday that stringent measures would be taken against individuals found accountable for the fire at a private hospital in Muzaffarpur, which resulted in five fatalities.
Minister Demands Report and Forms Probe Committee
In a statement issued to the media, Nishant Kumar revealed that he had requested a comprehensive report from the district administration and instructed officials to provide detailed information regarding the incident. He confirmed that a five-member investigative committee has been constituted to look into the matter, and further actions will be determined once the committee submits its findings.
Composition of the Investigation Panel
The committee includes the Muzaffarpur sub-divisional magistrate (East), sub-divisional police officer (East), additional collector (disaster), civil surgeon, and district fire officer. This panel is tasked with examining the circumstances that led to the blaze, assessing compliance with safety regulations, and identifying any lapses on the part of the hospital management.
Ex Gratia and Medical Care for Victims
Nishant Kumar announced an ex gratia payment of Rs 4 lakh each to the families of those who lost their lives in the fire. He emphasized that the health department and district administration have been directed to ensure proper medical treatment for the injured and to take all necessary steps for their care. Treatment arrangements have been made at various hospitals, including facilities in Patna.
Minister Visits Injured Patients
Upon returning from Delhi, Nishant Kumar visited patients injured in the fire who are currently undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Patna. He inquired about their health and reviewed the medical care being provided to them.
Strict Action and Statewide Fire Safety Audits
The minister asserted that negligence by hospital management would not be tolerated. In light of the incident, fire safety audits of all hospitals across the state will be conducted. He added that the government would act on the committee's report and initiate punitive measures against those found culpable.
Condolences from Former CM Nitish Kumar
Former Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, the minister's father, also expressed his condolences. In a post on social media platform X, Nitish described the loss of lives in the fire as 'extremely heartbreaking,' offered his sympathies to the bereaved families, and prayed for the speedy recovery of the injured.
