Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Saturday reviewed preparations for a high-level committee established to study demographic changes across India, with a special focus on sensitive border regions.
Committee Formation and Mandate
Chairing a meeting of Ministry of Home Affairs officials, Shah directed that all logistical and administrative support be extended to ensure the smooth functioning of the panel headed by former Supreme Court judge Justice Prakash Prabhakar Naolekar.
The committee, whose formation was announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi from the ramparts of the Red Fort on Independence Day last year, was formally constituted on May 26, 2026.
According to officials, the panel has been tasked with examining demographic changes in various parts of the country, especially border regions, and assessing their implications. Besides border districts, the committee will also study demographic trends in metropolitan centres and industrial towns to gain a broader understanding of population shifts and migration patterns.
Logistical Support and Progress
Officials said that the committee has already held its first meeting and finalised its agenda. The Ministry of Home Affairs will provide logistical and other necessary support to facilitate its work.
The constitution of the panel comes amid growing concerns over demographic changes in strategically important regions and is aimed at providing a comprehensive assessment to aid policy formulation.
