Chandigarh Mayor Saurabh Joshi presided over a meeting on Friday with Municipal Commissioner Amit Kumar and senior officials to evaluate key civic challenges and the operational efficiency of Municipal Corporation departments.
Sanitation and Waste Management
The discussions placed significant emphasis on enhancing sanitation services. Key points included scientific waste management, door-to-door garbage collection, and the strict implementation of the Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) Rules-2026. The mayor directed rigorous monitoring of sanitation services and prompt resolution of public complaints, alongside improved cleanliness across sectors, villages, and colonies.
Employee Welfare
The welfare of sanitation and other MC employees was also addressed, covering job security, working conditions, availability of safety equipment, and the resolution of pending issues.
Parking System Overhaul
The meeting reviewed the proposed transformation of the paid parking system, focusing on smart solutions such as e-ticketing, CCTV-linked central monitoring, boom barriers, real-time parking management, and integration with mobile applications at key locations.
Street Vendor Regulation
Issues concerning street vendors were deliberated, with the mayor advocating for designated vending zones, improved facilities, and systematic regulation while protecting livelihoods. Engineering wings presented updates on ongoing and proposed works across B&R, public health, horticulture, and electricity departments.
Draft Tender for Paid Parking
Officials also examined the draft tender for paid parking operations, dividing the city into four zones covering major commercial areas. Revised parking rates at key sites, including Sector 17, Sector 35-C, and Sector 22-B, aim to encourage usage of the Sector 17 multilevel parking facility.
The mayor and commissioner directed officers to incorporate public-friendly measures in the final policy framework and ensure a transparent, efficient, and technology-driven civic administration.
