RAIPUR: Chhattisgarh has intensified its crackdown on illegal sand mining, with a joint enforcement team seizing heavy excavation machinery and vehicles allegedly involved in unauthorized mining operations along the Jonk river in Mahasamund district since Friday. The state has also rolled out a new toll-free mining complaint system to tighten surveillance across the region.
Surprise Raid in Pithora Tehsil
A joint team comprising the central mineral flying squad and district mining officials conducted a surprise raid near Baldidih village in Pithora tehsil, where illegal sand excavation was allegedly taking place outside approved quarry limits. Officials reported that two chain-mounted machines, three Hyvas, and four tractors were found engaged in sand excavation and transportation without the necessary permissions, transit passes, or other mandatory mining documents. The operation was halted immediately, and action was initiated under the Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Act.
Seizure and Legal Action
The two chain-mounted excavation machines were seized and sealed on the spot, and notices were served to the quarry operator. This latest action comes amid growing concerns over rampant illegal sand extraction from riverbeds across several districts, an issue that has repeatedly triggered environmental concerns, revenue losses, and allegations of local-level collusion.
New Toll-Free Helpline for Public Reporting
In a parallel move aimed at strengthening enforcement and public monitoring, the state government has launched a dedicated mining information centre with a toll-free helpline number, 1800-233-2140. This helpline enables citizens to directly report instances of illegal mining, unauthorized transportation, and other mineral-related irregularities. The initiative is expected to enhance transparency and curb illegal activities through community participation.
The crackdown reflects the government's commitment to addressing the environmental and economic impacts of illegal sand mining, which has been a persistent issue in the state. With the new helpline, authorities hope to receive timely information from the public to take swift action against violators.
