A significant fire incident occurred in the Lalsingi area on the old Hoshiarpur Road in Una on Friday, resulting in the complete destruction of 30 temporary shelters (jhuggis) housing migrant labourers. The blaze consumed all household belongings of workers hailing from Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, including cash, clothing, food supplies, and cooking utensils.
Fire Department Response
According to officials from the fire department, the estimated property loss from the incident amounts to approximately Rs 3 lakh. Firefighters engaged in extinguishing the flames for nearly one and a half hours before successfully bringing the situation under control. A total of nine fire tenders were deployed to contain the rapidly spreading fire.
Fortunately, no loss of life or injuries were reported in the incident. The fire ignited during the afternoon hours and quickly spread to adjacent hutments due to strong winds, as stated by a fire department official. The exact cause of the fire remains unknown, and an investigation is currently underway, the official added.
Impact on Labourers
The affected labourers, who were primarily from Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, lost all their possessions in the blaze. The fire department has urged residents to exercise caution, especially during windy conditions, to prevent such incidents in the future.
