Fuel Sale Restrictions in Thane Threaten Housing Societies' Generator Supply
Fuel Sale Restrictions in Thane Threaten Generators

The Thane district administration's recent restrictions on the sale of fuel in containers are creating a crisis for large housing societies in the area. These societies rely on diesel-powered backup generators to maintain essential services, especially during frequent power cuts and the monsoon season. With the new rules, societies fear that their generators may run dry, leading to disruptions in daily operations.

Impact on Housing Societies

A Thane pump owner confirmed that fuel sales are now barred in any mode other than direct vehicle refueling. This forces societies to take extraordinary measures to secure diesel. Kunal Mohite, an office-bearer of a housing complex in Ghodbunder, expressed concerns: "Our society's generators have limited capacity. We face significant problems in obtaining diesel, and if the situation continues, we will be forced to curtail lift operations."

Collective Solutions

Ravi Singh, a facility manager overseeing 25 complexes, noted that societies are now pooling their requirements and collectively hiring tankers to transport fuel. "Each trip roughly costs an additional Rs 2,000 to Rs 3,000 per society," he stated. While this approach helps, it adds financial strain on residents.

Government Response

Thane Collector Shrikrishna Panchal clarified that instructions have been issued to ensure housing societies receive their required volume of diesel based on a demand letter. Operators are required to maintain detailed records of such transactions. The collector emphasized that the restrictions are meant to prevent hoarding and ensure fair distribution, but acknowledged the challenges faced by societies.

As the monsoon intensifies, housing societies are urging the administration to reconsider the restrictions or provide alternative solutions to avoid a complete shutdown of essential services.
