The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has cleared 406 footpath encroachments across the city, according to a statement from the civic body. The drive, conducted under the guidance of the Grievance and Bribery Abatement (GBA) cell, targeted illegal structures on footpaths that were obstructing pedestrian movement.
Details of the Encroachments
Out of the 406 cases, 300 were related to commercial establishments that had extended their premises onto footpaths, while 106 were residential encroachments. The BBMP said that the action was taken after receiving numerous complaints from citizens about the inconvenience caused by these encroachments.
“We have cleared all 406 encroachments and will continue to monitor the areas to prevent re-encroachment,” said a senior BBMP official. The drive covered all eight zones of the city, with the highest number of cases reported in the East and South zones.
Impact on Pedestrians
The encroachments had forced pedestrians to walk on roads, leading to safety hazards and traffic congestion. The BBMP’s action is expected to improve walkability and reduce accidents. “Footpaths are meant for pedestrians, and we will ensure they remain accessible,” the official added.
The GBA cell had issued notices to the violators before initiating the clearance drive. In cases where the encroachments were not removed voluntarily, the BBMP deployed teams to dismantle the structures.
Future Measures
The BBMP has also announced plans to install bollards and signage to prevent future encroachments. Citizens have been urged to report any new encroachments through the BBMP’s helpline or mobile app. The civic body has assured strict action against repeat offenders.
