The Shimla police have arrested a habitual drug peddler in a major crackdown on illegal narcotics trade. The accused, identified as Rakesh Kumar, a resident of the city, was apprehended near the Shimla bus stand during a special operation late on Tuesday evening.
Details of the Arrest
According to police officials, a team from the Sadar police station laid a trap after receiving specific intelligence about the movement of the suspect. The accused was found in possession of 50 grams of heroin and a substantial amount of cash, believed to be proceeds from drug sales. The police also recovered a mobile phone and a weighing scale from his possession.
Deputy Superintendent of Police (Headquarters) Madan Dhiman stated that the accused has a long criminal record and was previously booked under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. He had been evading arrest for several months and was involved in supplying drugs to local youth.
Legal Action
The police have registered a case under relevant sections of the NDPS Act and are investigating the source of the contraband. The accused was produced before a local court and remanded to police custody for further interrogation. Authorities are also probing his links with other drug peddlers in the region.
This arrest is part of the ongoing drive by the Shimla police to curb the drug menace in the state capital. Senior officials have reiterated their commitment to making the city drug-free and have urged citizens to cooperate by providing information about suspicious activities.
