Illegal Food Carts at Ludhiana Women's Institute Spark Safety and Hygiene Crisis
In Ludhiana, the Government Industrial Training Institute (Women) on Rani Jhansi Road is facing a severe safety and hygiene crisis due to encroachments by illegal food carts along its boundary wall. These vendors have created a congested and uneasy atmosphere, particularly during the institute's entry and dispersal hours, disrupting the disciplined environment essential for learning.
Principal Voices Concerns Over Student Discomfort
Principal Amandeep expressed deep concern, stating, "The crowd around these carts is discomforting for students. Many feel hesitant while entering or leaving, which disrupts the disciplined environment we strive to maintain." The situation is exacerbated by stray dogs attracted to leftovers from carts selling chicken and eggs, which frequently wander onto the campus, posing significant safety risks.
Stray Dogs and Sanitation Issues Worsen the Problem
A staff member highlighted the sanitation issues, noting, "The dogs feed on waste thrown outside and then enter the premises, creating fear among students and raising sanitation issues." Students have also complained of noise, littering, and restricted movement at the main gate, further compromising the secure learning environment required for the 168 women training in vocational trades such as sewing, embroidery, fashion technology, and computer graphics.
Political Patience Alleged in Lack of Action
Despite repeated written and verbal complaints to the municipal corporation, no action has been taken. The principal alleged that vendors claim political patronage to resist removal, stating, "Despite multiple requests, they have not moved." This inaction has left the administration frustrated and urgent in its call for authorities to clear the area immediately to ensure a conducive atmosphere for the students.
Urgent Call for Resolution to Protect Educational Environment
The institute's administration has urged local authorities to take swift action to address these encroachments, emphasizing the need for a safe and hygienic environment to support the educational and vocational development of its students. The ongoing issues underscore broader challenges in urban management and public safety in Ludhiana.
