Indore MC Removes Illegal Road, Wall on Sirpur Lake Drain

The Indore Municipal Corporation (IMC) on Thursday dismantled an illegal road and boundary wall that had been constructed on the primary drainage channel of Sirpur Lake. The action was taken by the corporation's colony cell to restore the natural flow of the channel and prevent potential waterlogging during the monsoon season.

Details of the Illegal Construction

According to Tina Sisodia, an official from the IMC colony cell, developers had laid pipes, filled the channel with murrum (a type of soil), and erected the structures to establish an unauthorised residential colony. The construction was carried out on agricultural land located at Sukh Niwas village in Rau tehsil.

Importance of the Drainage Channel

The targeted area serves as the overflow route for the Raja Ramanna Centre for Advanced Technology (RRCAT) and is the main feeder channel for Sirpur Lake. Any blockage could lead to severe waterlogging and disrupt water supply during heavy rains.

Restoration Efforts

The corporation removed the illegal road and boundary walls to restore the channel’s natural dimensions. This proactive measure aims to prevent potential waterlogging or supply disruptions during the rainy season, ensuring the smooth flow of water from RRCAT to Sirpur Lake.

Background and Significance

Sirpur Lake is a crucial water body in Indore, and its feeder channels must remain unobstructed to maintain ecological balance and prevent flooding. The IMC’s swift action underscores its commitment to protecting public infrastructure and natural resources from encroachment.

The removal operation was conducted without any resistance, and the area has been cleared of all illegal structures. The corporation has warned that similar actions will be taken against any future encroachments on drainage channels or lake feeders.
