Jamtara District Administration Prevents Child Marriage in Borwa Village
In a decisive move, the Jamtara district administration successfully intervened to stop a child marriage from taking place in Borwa village, located under the Narayanpur block, on Tuesday. Officials confirmed that swift action was taken following a complaint about the scheduled wedding of a 16-year-old daughter of Jamshed Ansari.
Rapid Response Team Formed to Address the Issue
Upon receiving the complaint, Jamtara Deputy Commissioner Ravi Anand established a specialized team to handle the situation. This team was led by Block Development Officer and Circle Officer Devaraj Gupta and included Panchayat Secretary Amarendra Jha and Narayanpur Block Supervisor Niyoti Das. Their mission was to reach the village and intervene before the marriage could be solemnized.
When the team arrived at Borwa village, they found that wedding preparations for the minor girl were already underway. The groom and his family, along with friends from a neighboring village, had gathered at the scene, ready for the ceremony to proceed.
Counseling and Legal Warnings Issued to the Family
Officials immediately engaged with the family members and villagers, providing counseling on the detrimental effects of child marriage. They emphasized that this practice not only harms the underage couple but also violates legal statutes. Strict legal action was warned against anyone involved, as child marriage is a punishable offence under Indian law.
The BDO, Devaraj Gupta, explained, "The parents of the minor girl are farmers by profession. By the time we reached Ansari's home, the groom's party had already arrived, and the marriage was set to be solemnized. We managed to secure an undertaking from Ansari, promising to withhold his daughter's marriage until she reaches the legal age as per the Constitution."
Community Engagement and Future Prevention Measures
After obtaining the written undertaking, the team left the venue, ensuring the immediate threat was averted. The BDO also took the opportunity to urge local residents to remain vigilant and report any instances of child marriage to the authorities or the Child Helpline. This proactive approach aims to foster community involvement in eradicating this social evil.
This incident highlights the ongoing challenges in rural areas regarding child marriage and underscores the importance of administrative vigilance and public awareness in protecting minors' rights.
