The Karnataka Rashtra Samithi (KRS) has raised strong objections against the proposed construction of a stadium in Anekal, alleging that it will adversely impact the eco-sensitive zone surrounding Bannerghatta National Park. The Karnataka Housing Board (KHB) has proposed building the stadium on approximately 75 acres of land in Anekal, with an estimated cost exceeding Rs 900 crore.
Environmental Concerns Raised
KRS leaders have questioned the feasibility and environmental viability of the project, emphasizing that the area falls within the eco-sensitive zone of Bannerghatta National Park. They argue that such large-scale construction could disrupt local wildlife corridors and lead to deforestation, affecting the fragile ecosystem of the region.
Stadium Proposal Details
The Karnataka Housing Board's plan includes a multi-purpose stadium with modern amenities, intended to host sporting events and cultural programs. However, environmental activists and local groups have voiced concerns over the lack of a comprehensive environmental impact assessment before finalizing the project.
KRS has urged the state government to reconsider the location and conduct a thorough study of the potential ecological consequences. They have also called for public consultations with stakeholders, including residents and environmental experts, to ensure transparency in the decision-making process.
The controversy comes amid growing awareness about the need to protect green spaces in and around Bengaluru. Bannerghatta National Park serves as a crucial habitat for numerous species, including elephants, leopards, and deer, and any encroachment could threaten biodiversity.
As of now, the Karnataka Housing Board has not issued an official response to the allegations. The state government is expected to review the proposal in light of the objections raised by KRS and other environmental groups.
