A major fire broke out in a hotel in Malviya Nagar, Delhi, on Thursday, prompting a police investigation that has now turned its focus on the hotel's owner. According to sources, the owner not only drove past the blaze site but also displayed an 'uncooperative' attitude during the probe, repeatedly stating 'Delhi mai sab chalta hai' (everything works in Delhi).
Owner's Dismissive Attitude
The police team investigating the fire violations was taken aback by the owner's response. When confronted with major safety lapses, including inadequate fire exits and non-functional extinguishers, the owner allegedly said, 'Delhi mai sab chalta hai,' implying that such violations are common and accepted in the city. This attitude has been described as 'uncooperative' by officials, who are now considering stricter action.
Safety Violations Found
During the inspection, authorities found multiple violations, including blocked emergency exits, expired fire extinguishers, and illegal modifications to the building's structure. The fire, which started on the ground floor, could have been contained if proper safety measures were in place. Fortunately, no casualties were reported, but the incident has raised serious questions about fire safety compliance in commercial establishments.
The police have registered a case against the owner under relevant sections of the Delhi Fire Service Act and the Indian Penal Code for endangering public safety. Further investigations are underway to determine if any criminal negligence contributed to the incident.
Community Response
Local residents have expressed outrage over the owner's casual attitude. 'Such negligence can cost lives. The authorities must set an example,' said a resident. The incident has sparked a debate about the 'chalta hai' culture in Delhi, with many calling for stricter enforcement of safety norms.
The fire department has urged all hotel owners to conduct mandatory safety audits and ensure compliance with fire safety regulations to prevent such incidents in the future.
