Nagpur Residents Receive Murky, Foul-Smelling Water, Sparking Health Fears
Murky Water in Nagpur Sparks Health Crisis Fears

Nagpur: Instead of receiving safe drinking water, hundreds of residents in Nagpur's Prabhag number 8 are receiving murky, foul-smelling water in their homes, triggering fears of a public health crisis and exposing serious lapses in the city's water supply system. Residents allege that for days they have been forced to deal with discoloured water, fuelling anger against Orange City Water Limited (OCWL) and civic authorities.

According to residents, water is supplied for barely an hour each day, but the quality remains highly inconsistent. For the first 15 minutes, taps discharge blackish water with a strong, filthy odour. This is followed by relatively clean water for about half an hour, after which the supply again turns contaminated, making it unsafe for consumption or household use.

Inspection by Corporator

The issue came to the fore on Wednesday when corporator and standing committee member Wasim Khan visited affected localities such as Takiya, the area behind Gulab Baba School and Haidari Road after receiving multiple complaints. During the inspection, residents showed bottles filled with discoloured water and questioned how families were expected to drink, cook or even carry out daily chores with such supply. The sight of contaminated water flowing from taps prompted Khan to summon OCWL officials to the spot and seek an explanation.

OCWL Response

When contacted, an OCWL spokesperson said the water was contaminated due to an overflowing or collapsed sewer chamber and numerous illegal connections in the area. OCWL added that they will replace a 700mm diameter pipeline to eliminate the root cause of contaminated water. Meanwhile, affected consumers are being provided clean water via tankers.
