Pedestrian dies in hit-and-run accident in Pune's Baner

A 38-year-old pedestrian died in a hit-and-run accident in the Mohannagar area of Baner, Pune, on Saturday morning. The victim, identified as Kunal Mohite of Sus, was out for his regular walk when the incident occurred. The Bavdhan police registered an accidental death case against the unknown driver of a compact sports utility vehicle (SUV) on Sunday.

Police Sub-Inspector Sarang Thakare of the Bavdhan police stated that the accident took place around 7:15 AM. Mohite was on his routine morning walk when an unknown vehicle struck him and fled the scene. He was rushed to Aundh hospital, where doctors pronounced him dead. CCTV footage revealed that a white-colored compact SUV hit Mohite, and the driver did not stop after the accident. Mohite worked with a logistics company. Police are currently searching for the vehicle and the driver.

Residents of Mohannagar have planned to meet the local corporator on Tuesday to discuss ongoing safety issues. Nikhil Nanal, a resident, pointed out that the road lacks a footpath, a long-pending demand. He emphasized that had there been a footpath, the victim would not have had to walk on the road. Additionally, encroachment on both sides of the road is a major problem. Streetlights are often non-functional, and speed breakers lack proper markings.
