SC Calls NEET Paper Leak 'Very Traumatic', Demands Accountability

The Supreme Court on Friday described the NEET paper leak controversy as "very traumatic" for students and their families, while emphasizing the need for accountability in the matter. The court was hearing a batch of petitions seeking reforms in the conduct of the medical entrance examination.

Court's Observations on Student Impact

A bench of Justices P S Narasimha and Alok Aradhe expressed concern that repeated lapses in major examinations could disappoint young aspirants. "We should not disappoint our youngsters," the bench observed during the hearing. The court noted the emotional investment of students and families, stating, "It is actually very traumatic if something like this happens, not just for the students, but also their families and everybody. They invest so much emotion."

Demand for Accountability and NTA Reforms

The petitions before the court included a plea for restructuring or replacing the National Testing Agency (NTA) with an independent and stronger body to conduct NEET and other major entrance exams. The bench stressed that accountability is crucial, observing, "The real problem won't stop till actual accountability arises."

Government's Response and New Measures

Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, representing the Centre, assured the court that the government is taking student concerns seriously. He informed that several new mechanisms have been introduced for the upcoming re-test. Mehta added that Prime Minister Modi is personally monitoring developments to ensure "there is no lacunae."

Background and Investigation

The NTA had cancelled the NEET UG 2026 examination held on May 3 after allegations of a paper leak. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is currently probing the matter. The re-examination is scheduled for June 21 under new monitoring measures announced by the NTA. Last year, the apex court had also heard multiple petitions following allegations of irregularities in NEET UG 2024.
