The Shimla Police have achieved a major breakthrough in their ongoing crackdown against the drug menace by arresting two interstate drug suppliers from Punjab and Chandigarh. The arrests were made following a meticulous operation based on specific intelligence inputs.
Details of the Arrest
The accused have been identified as Gurpreet Singh, a resident of Amritsar in Punjab, and Rajesh Kumar from Chandigarh. They were apprehended near the Shimla bus stand while attempting to deliver a consignment of heroin. During the search, the police recovered approximately 500 grams of heroin, along with a substantial amount of cash and mobile phones used for communication with their network.
Modus Operandi
According to the police, the duo had been active for several months, supplying drugs to peddlers in Shimla and surrounding areas. They would bring the contraband from Punjab and Chandigarh and distribute it through a chain of local dealers. The investigation revealed that they used encrypted messaging apps to coordinate their operations and avoid detection.
Police Investigation
Superintendent of Police Shimla, Sanjeev Kumar Gandhi, stated that the arrests are part of a larger effort to dismantle the drug supply chain in the region. He said, "We have been monitoring the activities of known drug suppliers for some time. This operation is a result of sustained surveillance and intelligence sharing with other state police departments." The police are now interrogating the accused to gather information about their network and other individuals involved.
Impact on Drug Trafficking
The seizure is expected to disrupt the drug trade in Himachal Pradesh, particularly in tourist hubs like Shimla. The police have also launched a campaign to raise awareness about the dangers of drug abuse among the youth. This arrest sends a strong message to drug traffickers that the police are committed to eradicating this menace from the state.
The accused have been booked under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act and will be produced before the local court. Further investigations are underway to trace the source of the drugs and identify other members of the syndicate.
