LUCKNOW: Three young men lost their lives and another sustained severe injuries after a speeding truck loaded with onions lost control and overturned onto two motorcycles on the Tanda-Banda Highway under Munshiganj police station limits in Amethi district late Thursday night. The truck driver abandoned the vehicle and fled the scene.
Details of the Incident
The tragic accident occurred around 12:30 am near Lokipur village in the Munshiganj area. According to police, the truck was traveling from Gauriganj towards Sultanpur when the driver allegedly lost control while trying to avoid a motorcycle ahead. The speeding truck veered off balance and overturned onto two motorcycles passing alongside.
Rescue and Response
The impact caused panic among bystanders, who alerted the police. Local residents and police launched a rescue operation, pulling the victims from beneath the overturned truck before rushing them to the hospital.
Two victims, identified as Prince Verma (16), son of Shyamlal Verma, and Sunny Kumar (25), son of Ramdev Verma, both residents of Ghazipur village under Antu police station in Pratapgarh district, died on the spot. Another victim, Raju, a resident of Sultanpur, suffered critical injuries and was taken to the district hospital but succumbed during treatment. The fourth victim, Ajit, a resident of Shravasti district, sustained serious injuries and remains hospitalized.
Background of the Victims
Preliminary investigations revealed that all four youths were relatives and were returning home after attending a community feast (Bhandara) when the accident occurred. The sudden tragedy has plunged their families into grief.
Police Action
Upon receiving information, a team from Munshiganj police station reached the spot and supervised rescue and recovery operations. The bodies were sent for post-mortem after completing legal formalities.
Munshiganj Station House Officer Shivakant Tripathi said the truck has been seized and efforts are underway to trace and arrest the absconding driver. The families of the deceased have been informed, and further investigation into the circumstances leading to the accident is in progress. Police are examining all aspects, including the vehicle's speed and possible driver negligence.
