In a tragic incident in Jaisalmer's Chundhi village on Monday, two teenage cousins lost their lives after getting trapped in quicksand while bathing in a farm pond. The deceased were identified as Surendra (17) and Virendra (16).
Details of the incident
According to Assistant Sub-Inspector Mukesh Beera of Sadar Thana police, the cousins had gone to bathe in a water tank on their farm along with two other brothers, Mukesh and Ravi. While all four were bathing, Surendra and Virendra moved into a deeper section of the tank, where they began sinking into a swamp formed by accumulated mud and silt.
When Mukesh and Ravi saw their brothers drowning, they attempted to rescue them but were unable to pull them out. Mukesh then ran to the village to alert the family. Villagers and family members rushed to the tank and, after considerable effort, managed to pull Surendra out. He was taken to Jawahar Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
Recovery of the second victim
The civil defence team arrived at the scene after receiving information about the incident. Virendra was not visible on the water's surface as he had sunk completely into the deep swamp. Villagers broke one side of the tank wall, and as the water flow reduced, Virendra's body was recovered. Family members took him to the hospital, but doctors declared him dead.
Family members refused post-mortem examinations for both bodies. Police completed the necessary paperwork and handed over the bodies to the family.
