Vadodara Revives Pratappura Reservoir After 19 Years to Tackle Water Needs
Vadodara taps Pratappura reservoir after 19-year hiatus

In a significant move to bolster its water security, Vadodara has begun drawing water from the Pratappura reservoir for the first time in nearly two decades. The reservoir, which had been out of commission since it was breached during the devastating floods of 2005, has now been restored and integrated back into the city's water supply network.

From Flood Damage to a Vital Resource

The story of the Pratappura reservoir's revival is one of recovery and foresight. For nineteen years, this water body remained inactive, its contents draining into the Vishwamitri river following the catastrophic breach in 2005. The turning point came after the 2024 floods, which prompted the Vadodara Municipal Corporation (VMC) to implement comprehensive flood control measures. A key part of this strategy involved deepening and fully restoring the Pratappura reservoir to a functional state.

Enhanced Capacity Meets City Demand

The restoration work has dramatically increased the reservoir's holding potential. According to VMC officials, extensive dredging operations have boosted the Pratappura reservoir's capacity to an impressive 5,410 million litres. Currently, it holds approximately 5,096 million litres of water. This substantial reserve is now being strategically released into the older Ajwa reservoir, which serves as a primary source for the city's drinking water.

A Phased Release for Sustained Supply

The transfer of water is not being done all at once. Municipal authorities have opted for a gradual, phased release from Pratappura into Ajwa. This careful management is designed to ensure a steady and reliable supply. Officials estimate that the water being transferred from the revived reservoir will be sufficient to meet Vadodara's urban water requirements for approximately one month, providing a crucial buffer and enhancing the city's resilience against shortages.

This successful reactivation marks a major achievement for the VMC's water management and disaster mitigation plans. It demonstrates a shift from viewing infrastructure solely through the lens of flood control to leveraging it for long-term resource sustainability. The return of the Pratappura reservoir to active duty is a welcome development for Vadodara's residents, adding a vital layer of security to the city's water portfolio.
