Western Railway on Tuesday launched a massive anti-encroachment drive in the Garib Nagar area of Bandra East in Mumbai. The operation aimed to clear illegal structures that had been built along the railway tracks, posing safety risks and obstructing railway operations.
Large Security Presence During the Drive
The demolition was carried out with a strong presence of uniformed police personnel from the Mumbai Police, Railway Protection Force (RPF), and Government Railway Police (GRP). This multi-force deployment ensured that the drive proceeded without any major law and order issues. Authorities had made prior preparations to handle any potential resistance from encroachers or local residents.
Details of the Operation
The anti-encroachment drive targeted unauthorized constructions that had come up over the years in the Garib Nagar slum cluster. According to railway officials, these structures were dangerously close to the tracks and violated safety norms. The operation involved the use of heavy machinery to demolish the illegal buildings, while railway and police personnel cordoned off the area to prevent any untoward incidents.
Western Railway has been conducting such drives periodically to reclaim its land and ensure the safety of train operations. The Bandra area, being a densely populated locality, has seen several encroachments over time. This latest drive is part of a broader initiative to clear all railway land of illegal settlements.
Reactions and Aftermath
Local residents expressed mixed reactions to the demolition. While some acknowledged the need for safety and legal compliance, others voiced concerns about the lack of alternative housing arrangements for those displaced. Railway authorities, however, stated that the encroachments were illegal and had to be removed to prevent accidents and maintain smooth train services.
The drive also saw the involvement of civic officials from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), who assisted in coordinating the demolition and debris clearance. The entire operation was videographed and documented for official records.
Western Railway has urged people not to occupy railway land illegally and warned of strict action against future encroachments. The drive is expected to continue in other parts of Mumbai as well, as part of a sustained effort to keep railway premises free from unauthorized structures.
