Kolkata: Three police officers and two CRPF personnel were injured while attempting to quell a clash between supporters of the Trinamool Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party in Sandeshkhali on Tuesday night. The altercation erupted over control of a 'bheri' (pisciculture pond).
Injuries and Arrests
The Officer-in-Charge of Nazat Police Station, along with two constables and two CRPF jawans, sustained bullet injuries. West Bengal Director General of Police SN Gupta confirmed that four individuals have been arrested in connection with the incident.
“Preliminary investigation suggests a dispute over a fishery pond led to the clash around 10:30 pm. As police rushed to the spot, miscreants opened fire. We have arrested four persons and seized firearms, explosives, and cartridges,” said Amit Javalgi, Inspector General of Barasat.
Details of the Clash
According to sources, the clash broke out in the Rajbari area after armed men from both political groups gathered near the pond. OC Bharat Prasun Purakayet, along with police and central forces, reached the spot but became caught in the crossfire.
The injured were initially taken to Minakhan Rural Hospital and later shifted to a private hospital off the Eastern Metropolitan Bypass in Kolkata for advanced treatment.
Authorities have launched a detailed investigation into the incident, and security has been heightened in the area to prevent further violence.
