The Solan district of Himachal Pradesh witnessed a voter turnout of 79.47% in the recent state assembly elections, according to official data released by the Election Commission. A notable feature of the polling was the higher participation of women voters compared to men.
Women Voters Lead the Way
Out of the total electorate of 5,21,000 voters in the district, 4,14,000 exercised their franchise. The number of women voters who cast their votes was 2,12,000, while men voters numbered 2,02,000. This translates to a women voter turnout of 81.2%, surpassing the men's turnout of 77.8%.
Constituency-Wise Breakdown
The district comprises four assembly constituencies: Solan, Doon, Kasauli, and Arki. The highest turnout was recorded in the Doon constituency at 82.1%, followed by Arki at 80.5%, Solan at 79.1%, and Kasauli at 76.8%.
Reasons for Higher Women Turnout
Election officials attributed the higher women participation to several factors. The district administration had launched awareness campaigns specifically targeting women voters. Additionally, the presence of all-women polling booths in some areas encouraged more women to come out and vote. The introduction of facilities like separate queues and childcare centers at polling stations also contributed to the increased turnout.
Overall Voter Turnout in Himachal Pradesh
The Solan district's turnout of 79.47% is higher than the state average of 75.6%. The state recorded an overall voter turnout of 75.6% in the assembly elections, which were held on November 12. The counting of votes is scheduled for December 8.
The higher participation of women voters in Solan district is being seen as a positive sign for gender equality in the electoral process. Political analysts believe that this trend could influence the election results, as women voters are increasingly becoming a decisive factor in Indian elections.
