NEW DELHI: The fissures within the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) came into the open on Monday, as a group of party MLAs, spearheaded by senior leader C Ve Shanmugam, submitted a letter to pro tem Speaker M V Karuppaiah. The letter sought the appointment of former minister S P Velumani as the leader of the AIADMK legislature party. This move is widely interpreted as a significant assertion by the Velumani faction, fueling speculation of an internal power struggle aimed at sidelining party general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami within the assembly.
The development follows reports that several MLAs had demanded Palaniswami's resignation after the party's lackluster performance in the recent elections. The AIADMK contested 167 out of 234 constituencies but managed to secure only 47 seats, a result that has triggered widespread discontent within the party ranks.
In the aftermath of the electoral setback, a series of MLA meetings chaired by Palaniswami were convened. However, several senior leaders and former ministers, including Shanmugam and Velumani, along with their supporting MLAs, conspicuously stayed away from these meetings. This boycott underscores the deepening rift within the party.
Internal Strife and Leadership Challenges
The demand for Velumani's appointment as legislature party leader is seen as a direct challenge to Palaniswami's authority. Former AIADMK leader K C Palanisamy commented on the situation, stating, "There is a clear split within the party. Many MLAs want a change in leadership. If Palaniswami continues as a leader, there is a possibility of some MLAs extending support to the TVK." This remark highlights the potential for further fragmentation, with some members reportedly considering alignment with the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK).
Reactions and Future Implications
The internal discord poses a serious threat to the AIADMK's stability as it grapples with its diminished electoral standing. The coming days are likely to witness intensified maneuvering as both factions seek to consolidate their positions. The party's ability to present a united front in the assembly remains uncertain, with the Velumani camp pushing for a change in leadership.
