The State Election Commissioner of Mizoram, H Lalthlangliana, officially declared the schedule for the upcoming Aizawl Municipal Corporation (AMC) elections on Wednesday. Polling for the 19-ward civic body is slated to take place on April 21, with the crucial vote counting scheduled for April 27. This announcement marks the commencement of the electoral process, with the model code of conduct coming into immediate effect.

Comprehensive Election Timeline and Procedures

According to Commissioner Lalthlangliana, the nomination process has already begun, with the last date for filing nominations set for 3 PM on March 25. The scrutiny of nomination papers will be conducted on March 27, followed by the withdrawal deadline at 3 PM on March 30. Polling hours are fixed from 7 AM to 5 PM on April 21, and if necessary, a re-poll will be held on April 23. The entire election process is expected to conclude by April 30.

Ward Reservations and Administrative Appointments

Out of the 19 wards in the Aizawl Municipal Corporation, six are specifically reserved for women candidates, as confirmed by the State Election Commission. To ensure smooth conduct, the Aizawl district deputy commissioner has been appointed as the District Municipal Election Officer (DMEO), supported by four municipal returning officers who will oversee the polling operations.

Voter Demographics and Polling Infrastructure

The electoral roll for the AMC election comprises a total of 237,846 voters, including 128,470 female voters and 109,376 male voters. A network of 257 polling stations has been established, with provisions for auxiliary stations if required to accommodate voter turnout. The elections will utilize 40 Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) manufactured by Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL), which have been requisitioned from the Election Commission of India (ECI) to ensure transparency and efficiency.
