Union Home Minister Amit Shah visited Bastar on May 19, 2026, and declared the region free of Naxalism. He credited the security forces and the BJP government in Chhattisgarh for this transformation. Addressing a press conference in Jagdalpur, Shah said that people in Bastar are now living without fear, marking a significant shift from the past.
Veer Gundadhur Seva Dera Initiative
Shah highlighted the Veer Gundadhur Seva Dera initiative, which aims to drive development and generate employment in the region. He announced that approximately 70 of the nearly 200 security camps established earlier in Bastar would be converted into Seva Deras in the first phase. These centers will focus on skill development, self-employment, education, and job opportunities in both government and private sectors. Additionally, cooperative-based opportunities will be provided for farmers and women.
Criticism of Previous Congress Government
Shah also launched a sharp attack on the previous Congress government in Chhattisgarh, accusing it of failing in its anti-Naxal campaign. He contrasted the current BJP-led government's approach, which he said has brought peace and development to the region. The Home Minister emphasized that the new initiatives are designed to ensure long-term prosperity and stability in Bastar.
The announcement comes as part of a broader strategy to consolidate security gains and promote economic growth in areas previously affected by left-wing extremism. The conversion of security camps into development hubs is expected to create a sustainable ecosystem for local communities.
